Volvo constructs massive energy park in Sweden

Volvo is constructing one of Sweden’s largest energy parks near its planned battery cell production facility in Mariestad. This development represents the next stage in the automaker’s regional growth, merging large-scale battery storage with a future testing site for advanced energy solutions.

Dual focus: energy storage and innovation

The facility will function along two distinct lines. First, a 70 MW/260 MWh battery storage system—among the largest in Sweden, will help maintain stability in the area’s power network. The second component serves as a testing ground for next-generation energy technologies.

Volvo’s storage system will initially rely on its own Volvo Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) technology. Since the company controls most of its Swedish battery production in the region, the park will enhance grid reliability in an area with high energy demands. It will also act as a full-scale demonstration for potential customers, expanding as energy solutions and commercial applications advance.

The facility is scheduled to begin operations in 2027, aligning with Volvo’s broader commitment to fossil-free transportation.

Broader industrial impact

The energy park extends beyond grid support as part of a wider industrial initiative. Volvo is simultaneously establishing a large-scale battery cell plant in Mariestad to fulfill demand for electric heavy vehicles and machinery. That production site, set to start operations after 2030, will be located adjacent to the energy park.

When combined with Volvo’s existing driveline factory in nearby Skövde, the new facilities will strengthen the company’s industrial and supply chain presence in the region. Shared resources and expertise will likely speed up development while lowering costs and operational risks for both ventures.

Progressive development with lasting benefits

The project will roll out in phases, beginning with the battery storage system. Later expansions will introduce additional testing capabilities for emerging energy technologies, though Volvo has not disclosed further timelines beyond the 2027 launch of the initial storage.

Lars Stenqvist, overseeing the Mariestad facility’s development, stated: “Det här initiativet är ett naturligt nästa steg i utvecklingen av vår anläggning i Mariestad och speglar vår vision om ett mer robust, flexibelt och hållbart energisystem. Energiparken i Mariestad, som med cirka 70 MW/260 MWh i batterilagring blir en av de största i Sverige, kommer att stödja Volvokoncernens och Sveriges ambitioner att minska koldioxidutsläppen. Den blir också en utmärkt testbädd för att prova och vidareutveckla energilösningar för våra kunder.”

The park’s scale—70 MW/260 MWh—places it among Sweden’s top energy storage installations, but its significance lies in its broader implications. By linking storage with a testing platform, Volvo positions energy as a central element of its industrial strategy rather than an auxiliary function.
