Through the 2026 FINCA Ventures Prize Competition, six African startups collectively secured $400,000 in funding. This initiative backs early-stage ventures focused on financial inclusion, sustainable agriculture, and food systems solutions.

The six finalists presented their businesses to a panel of investors and industry experts on October 6, 2026. The competition recognized startups in two categories: fintech for financial inclusion and sustainable agriculture and food systems.

Kenyan fintech startup VunaPay emerged as a first-place winner, securing $100,000 to expand its digital payment and financing infrastructure for smallholder farmers. VunaPay enables agricultural cooperatives to facilitate faster payments while improving farmers’ access to formal financial services.

Another Kenyan startup, Kumbatia Seafood, received $100,000 in the sustainable agriculture category. The company supports small-scale fishing communities through financing, cold-chain logistics, and improved access to premium seafood markets.

Second-place winners, including Kenyan fintech nesti and Zimbabwean agritech eAgro, received $60,000 each. Nesti is developing technology that allows renters to build credit histories through consistent rental payments, while eAgro provides AI-powered agricultural guidance accessible through basic mobile phones.

FINCA Global CEO Andrée Simon highlighted the importance of supporting African entrepreneurs early, particularly those developing practical solutions for underserved communities. Winnie Mwangi, FINCA Ventures Managing Director, emphasized that catalytic funding can help promising startups build credibility, attract additional investment, and expand their operations.

The winners of the competition will use the funding to expand their operations and improve their services. VunaPay will use the funding to expand its digital payment and financing infrastructure, while Kumbatia Seafood will use the funding to support small-scale fishing communities. The second-place winners, nesti and eAgro, will use the funding to develop their technologies and improve their services.
