Zimbabwe startup raises $2M to grow AI voice data business

The founders of Ocular AI have secured $2 million in pre-seed funding to expand their operations, marking a key milestone for the Zimbabwean startup. The investment was spearheaded by Drive Capital, with additional backing from Y Combinator, Alumni Ventures, and other venture capital groups.

Established in 2024, Ocular AI distinguishes itself from many African AI ventures by prioritizing global clients over domestic markets. Its specialized datasets and performance benchmarks serve major AI research institutions and Fortune 100 companies, though customer identities remain undisclosed. The company’s expertise lies in voice-based AI, where conventional systems often fail to capture subtleties like tone, hesitation, or emotional inflection in spoken language.

Unlike traditional approaches, Ocular AI curates high-fidelity conversations recorded in controlled studio environments. These datasets are designed to expose and address weaknesses in existing AI models. Beyond voice, the company is developing audiovisual datasets that enable systems to analyze speech in conjunction with facial expressions and body language. To ensure accuracy, Ocular AI partners with an Expert Network of qualified professionals who validate and refine its collections.

This funding round signals growing investor trust in African technology firms that contribute to the global AI ecosystem. While Ocular AI has already achieved seven-figure annual revenue, precise financial details and the intended use of the new capital have not been disclosed. By specializing in voice and multimodal AI, the company is poised to play a critical role in advancing next-generation conversational interfaces.
